Bahamas - Information

Long Island - Island of the contrasts

Located 150 miles (230 km) southeast of Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, and just across the Exuma Cays, this 76 mile (120 km) long and half to 3 mile (1-5 km) wide island is an unspoiled and scenic hideaway divided by the Tropic of Cancer and bordered by two strikingly different coast lines, one with powder white beaches and the other, rocky headlands that descend suddenly into the Sea.

The terrain varies from sloping hills in the northeast to low hillsides in the south fading into stark white flatlands where salt was produced in years ago. Long Island's interesting caves, one of the deepest (700 feet / 200 m) blue holes in the world, gorgeous bays, towering cliffs and rolling hills are in direct contrast with the more tropical landscape and coast lines found elsewhere in The Bahamas.
The area has stunning beaches and, in fact,
Cape Santa Maria was voted by a leading German newspaper as one of the ten best beaches in the world!. Visitors headed to one of the resorts at either Cape Santa Maria or  Stella Maris could fly directly from the U.S.A. into the Stella Maris International Airport which offers Customs and Immigration.
Due to its southeasterly location,
Long Island has a pleasant, mild climate. Rainfall amounts to a healthy 50 inches (125 cm) per year. The island's narrow width and relatively high elevation enables it to take maximum advantage of the so-called tropial "trade-breezes".
Long Island is considered as one of Christopher Columbus' earlier stops, probably his third, after San Salvador and Rum Cay. Lucaya-Indians supposedly called it "Yuma" and Columbus named it "Ferandina" , thus dedicating it to his mentor, the King of Spain. After he set sight on Long Island, he wrote in his log-book: "This is the most beautiful island in the World..." . Loyalists from Carolina settled here in 1790 with their slaves. They built vast plantations and thrived briefly growing sea-island cotton, but the abolition of slavery made them unprofitable.

The infrastructure of Long Island has been vastly improved over the past few years, with the inhabitants enjoying the services of electricity, water, telephone, internet and satellite tv.

stella-marisLong Islanders are said to be among the friendliest of all Bahamians - and the island is virtually crime free. No need to lock your home or car!
Long Island
has become known in the tourist branch through Stella Maris Resort that features all kind of watersport, particularly scuba-diving. "Diving with the sharks" is one of the main attractions without ever having suffered any unpleasant incident. Countless reefs and coral gardens near the shore invite snoklers. Sailing has become more popular every year and Stella Maris' Marina offers sheltered docking space. Fishing around Long Island is outstanding and most varied. Not only is there deep sea fishing for marlin, tuna, dolphin (dorado) and other game fish, but the quality of bone fishing in the shallow bays is also well known and attracts enthusiasts from all over.

As fishing and boating are two of the fasted growing recreational activities in the United States, this market will be of great importance for the future of Long Isand and Stella Maris. Ownership and active management of Stella Maris Resort & Estates has been for decades in the hands of several German families.

Stella Maris is a 3,000-acre (some 12 km2) development consisting of a vacation resort hotel, an airport, a full-service marina and a land sales and development company including a construction division. It is located near the northern end of Long Island.
The entire Stella Maris site covers an area which runs from the Atlantic Ocean to the Exuma Bank, the body of water separating Long Island and the Exuma Islands. Because of the rolling nature of the land, Stella Maris Estates has a very high proportion of superior quality single family home-sites offering magnificent views of the sea.

Stella Maris was begun in 1963 built. The project included a small resort, an air field and approximately 2,000 acres of land which were improved with roads and surveyed for some 1,500 lots.

These lots were primarily designed for single family homes, but some multi-family sites and commercial areas were identified also, along with parks and lakes. In addition there were another 1,000 acres of land on the southern end of the site which remained unimproved to this day.

Stella Maris is the prime resort on Long Island, though there is another fine resort-club located on Cape Santa Maria, north of Stella Maris. The attractions of Long Island and Stella Maris are numerous.

Tourists and residents alike enjoy its remote, quiet location, gorgeous beaches and varied sport activities - to say nothing of the excellent food and hospitality provided by the owners / operators of the resort itself.

stella-maris-3Another major attraction of Long Island and Stella Maris is the quality and diversity of the SCUBA diving available in the area. Stella Maris provides perhaps the most exciting shark dive in the entire Caribbean Region. This dive, which is done at least once a week, provides SCUBA divers with an unusual opportunity to see and photograph reef sharks at an extremely close range. The Shark dive and others have made Stella Maris one of the top SCUBA diving sites in the Bahamas. Stella Maris has been written up on several occasions in “Skin Diver” magazine and other diving publications as to the high quality diving and facilities available. This dive market has been an important source of business for the resort over the years, and with the continued popularity of the sport, the demand from this market segment can only be expected to increase.

The current owners of Stella Maris are four families, originally from Germany, who have been involved with the project since the mid-1960’s. This group has, over the years, developed an outstanding small resort and a significant land sales and development company. Each of the owners is actually involved in the day-to-day operations of the company. Through these efforts, they have consistently made profits from the venture and have reinvested these profits in improvements to the development.

Stella Maris caters to a diverse group of nationalities with about half of its hotel guests being from North-America (mainly the U.S.), the other half coming all the way across the Atlantic Ocean from Germany and many other European countries. A similar split-up, percentage-wise, pertaining to nationalities is true for the over one hundred thirty homeowners in the Estate.

The Stella Maris Inn - which operates the Resort Club and Marina - is faced with seasonal trends which are similar to the Bahamas as a whole, with business peaking in the late winter and spring, and slow periods occurring in the fall. The Inn does have the advantage of appealing to divers who tend to ignore seasonal concerns more than other guests, and it has an incredibly large number of patrons who return to the resort year after year.

This high percentage of repeat guests provides some stability in business volume. Further, these repeat guests have expressed a preference for the environment of Stella Maris and Long Island. Many of them became owners of lots and homes.

Stella Maris / Long Island
A place to fall in love - FOREVER

10 importent points of the Bahamas

1.

The Bahamas, foremost the out-islands (also called „family-islands“), are a true nature paradise. Its snow-white sandy beaches and the warm, incredibly clean and clear Ocean waters have no comparison  to fear on this planet.
2. The Bahamas enjoy an all-year-around climate that is considered one of the best in the world. It is also pleasant for Western and Northern Europeans being used to cooler weather.
3. The Bahamas offer a well-established and fully reliable bank-system, one of the largest in the world. Among the more than 500 banking institutions, most of the important international banks are represented in Nassau, the capital of the country. Money transfers are easy to execute, world-wide, and currency conversions are handled without a problem. The Bahamian dollar has always been (and still is) equal to the U.S. dollar.
4. The Bahamas present intact bank secrecy that is functional contrary to other countries that promise same. No financial or banking information is being exchanged with other nations. Drug money laundering is strictly a no-no, though, and will be forcefully prosecuted since the Bahamas have signed respective agreements with the U.S. and EU.
5. The Bahamas don’t know the word „taxes“, not for income/profit, not for assets/net worth. This concerns private persons as well as corporations of all types. There are also no gift and inheritance taxes. However, there is a modest property tax in place pertaining to real estate (land and homes).
6. The Bahamas are presenting a well-established infrastructure. Flights from Nassau to the out-islands and the U.S. (particularly Florida) are well organized and frequent. There is daily service to Stella Maris by Bahamasair (45 minutes). Direct flights from Miami and Ft. Lauderdale (1 ½ hours) to Stella Maris are in preparation. Private jets only need half the quoted time. In addition, a sizeable number of direct flights reach Nassau from the Northeastern part of the U.S. and Canada. Brit. Airways arrives from London five times a week.
7. The Bahamas are offering annual resident permits for homeowners that can be extended for a fee of $ 1,000. No discrimination existing towards citizens of certain countries with the exception of the so-called „terrorist nations“.
8. The Bahamas also feature permanent residency, predominantly but not exclusively for those that invest at least $ 500'000, which can be in real estate ownership. Such residency is also valid for close family members. The cost involved is negligible but the services of a local attorney is still recommended. This allows to have residency in the Bahamas for tax purposes, with no minimum stay required. However, legal aspects need to be investigated due to different respective laws in the country of citizenship. To obtain Bahamian citizenship (including a passport) is rather difficult but not impossible to achieve. For someone who plans to engage in substantial business (in the millions of dollar) in the Bahamas, this could be accomplished.
9. The Bahamas support the foundation of corporations and trusts of all kind. The International Business Corporation (IBC) is a favorite corporation form with over 100'000 of them existing. The purchase and sale of real estate by foreigners is made easy, the required permit being just a formality.
10. The Bahamas are closely connected to the world – thanks to its central location and nearness to the U.S., particularly Florida. Therefore, and inspite of its (relative) remoteness, „the center of civilization“ is reached in no time from an out-island like Long Island! That is if someone has such senseless desire...

The slogan for this island-nation seems  – based on the above listed 10 features / advantages – really justified:

IT’S BETTER IN THE BAHAMAS!
